Tell Us Once Service
Once you have registered the death, you can then complete a Tell us Once Service.
The “Tell Us Once” service is a free, voluntary UK government service that allows you to report a death to a range of government and local council departments all at once, rather than having to contact them individually. To use it, you get a unique reference number from the registrar after you register the death, which you can then use to report the death securely and confidentially online or via phone.
This service is a free service for people who live in England, Scotland, or Wales. By using this service, it will notify the following departments.
- HMRC: they will deal with personal tax and will cancel any benefits the deceased has received, for example, disability benefits and tax credits.
- Passport Office: they will cancel British passports
- DVLA: If this deceased held a UK drivers licence, this will be cancalled
- Department for Work and Pensions: cancel pension and any tax support
- Local Council: cancel any council tax support which the deceased may have been receiving and will remove the deceased from the electoral register.
- Veterans UK: will also cancel payments from pension schemes with the armed forces and war pensions, and they will check to see if any payments can be made to a dependent, for example, the deceased ‘s spouse, civil partner, or child.
Before using the service you will need to have the reference number that you got from the registrar.
- Full name including middle names and previous names
- Date they died
- Executor or Administrator details: This refers to the person dealing with the deceased’s estate. You’ll need their name, address, contact details.
- Surviving spouse or civil partner: You’ll need their full details, DOB, including name, address, contact details and National Insurance (NI) Number.
- If there is no surviving spouse or civil partner, you’ll need the details of their next of kin.
- If the person died in either a hospital, care/nursing or hospice you’ll need to provide the name and address of the institution.
You might also need:
- A valid passport for the deceased
- Their drivers licence
- Vehicle registration numbers
- Their Blue Badge (disabled badge)
- Details of any State Pension
- Details of any Armed Forces Pension or compensation scheme
- National Insurance (NI) Number
